I’ve got big expectations for April. It has been a long winter, and we are due for some nice weather. I don’t want to jinx it, but there is no snow in the 10 day forecast!! To start feeling spring like, try some brighter colors on your nails. I’m loving the blues and purples – what about you?!
When it comes to exercise and working out Melissa and I couldn’t be more opposite. She loves to exercise, while I on the other hand am more a lover of sitting on my couch in my fat pants. As I get older I realize the need to live a more active lifestyle not only for the fit of my clothes, but my overall long-term health. I never thought I would ever say those words, but alas I beyond the decade of life where immediate gratification or bust. In an effort to get my self to be more active I have been in search of things to inspire me to do so.
1. Get a workout buddy. Because not everyone can afford a personal trainer-however they are the greatest motivator i have come to experience it isn’t always financially feasible. This person ideally is more motivated than you to exercise and go to gym classes. Having someone who is more enthusiastic about exercise that you respect is a huge motivator!
2. Join a somewhat expensive gym. I realize this isn’t for everyone, but I find little things more disturbing than wasting my hard-earned $$. So if I am shucking out loads of cash for something, you better believe I am going to use it. It is like those expensive shoes you purchase with the pay per wear justification-wear it into the ground.
3. Recently I have been stumbling upon fitness literature-not looking for this stuff, promise. I recently read this article that lit the smallest, faintest flame under me. There are some instantly noticeable benefits stated; exercise does help my overall mood and if I find that I stressed or experiencing anxiety it provides instant relief.
4. Get some cute work out clothes, and no I don’t mean yoga pants you wear everywhere except to yoga class. I have been wanting a Nike Fuelband for a while. Sometimes my motivators only work for short periods of time (6 months or so), then I have to find the next round of things to get me up and moving. I know myself well enough to know that I would compete with myself on a day-to-day basis with one of these bad boys.

For today’s post I thought it would be nice to show some color. Thanks to yesterday’s snow storms most of us on the east coast are seeing nothing but white.
Lately I have been struggling with finding inspiration; this along with my crazy schedule as of late has left me a little absent. Melissa and I have both had several conversations on the topic of writing without inspiration and both agree that is tends to leave us/you with a sub par product. This past weekend we both left the confines of the hectic cities we reside in to the pleasantries of a slower pace of life. I have to say, you don’t really realize how much you need until you have these small opportunities to recalibrate yourself. A typical trip home requires me to continue to travel to a million different locations while I am there-it is exhausting. This past weekend I went home to surprise my best friend for her 30th birthday and didn’t tell a soul. It was so refreshing to go home and not have a thing to do except binge watch The Shahs of Sunset-coincidentally Reza passed me when we arrived home in JFK.
Moving forward I have decided in the future I will make more of these sorts of trips, excursions that are equally beneficial to everyone involved and not allow myself to feel any guilt if I don’t get to squeeze in a visit with someone. At the end of the day I am one human, and I am no use to anyone if I am sick, exhausted and cranky-ain’t nobody got time for that.
Now that I feel as though I am getting my footing again, I am making an effort to find things in my everyday life that can be a source of inspiration for me. We all get the winter blues and sometimes it just helps to have those things that give you perspective. I look forward to pushing this reset button and sharing these things with you.
So I had a completely different post for today, but was inspired and decided to run with it. I don’t know if it is because it is a new year, but I have been OBSESSED with getting organized. I have a ridiculous amount of stuff that I have never taken the time to really go through. Like why do I still have flash cards I made in college? Or binders of old jobs that have nothing to do with my current role? I will say it was a good trip down memory lane sorting through old t-shirts and trinkets – but seriously do I need 100 shot glasses from every place I have ever visited?! Um no.
My approach to organization is that everything should have its place. I like things put away and I hate clutter. We live in a small space in DC and can’t really avoid clutter. But I do believe there is a BIG difference in clutter vs organized clutter. I do take pride in having organized clutter and feel that I should share a few on my quick list on how to get organized.
1) Keep one SMALL drawer or box for memorabilia. This past weekend I was at my parent’s house going through childhood things. I came across tons of trophies from rec league sports I played in elementary school. Out of the pile I decided to keep two, that I may one day decide to get rid of, but there were two that were from great memories. Some items are just that, great memories, so don’t feel like you have to purge of everything at once. Being and staying organized is an evolving process.
2) If you haven’t worn it in a year you probably aren’t going to ever wear it again. I have a hard time parting with clothes. But holding onto short skirts I had in college or ANYTHING from high school is ridiculous. Unless it is a classic piece that never goes out of style. I don’t know about you, but I wasn’t buying that type of clothing in HS. Donate and give away old clothes or things you don’t need. Your give a ways may be someone else’s treasure.
3) Invest in an external hard drive. My computer crashed this year, and luckily I had been pretty on top of saving files and pictures. I invested and got an easy peasy external hard drive that fits 1T full of whatever I want it to. In my effort to be paperless, I can save and scan account information or bills that I have would have normally kept in paper form.
4) Shop for fun organizational tools that will make you want to stay organized. The Container Store, Target, Ikea, and Poppin all have fun bins, trays, and organizational materials that will help keep your ascetic and style. We are so lucky that organizing no longer means clear plastic bins. I mean come on how fun would it be to have ALL PINK office supplies or seagrass baskets?!
5) Set goals and plans. I am super type A, love lists, and I work much better when I have specific goals in mind. Sometimes getting organized makes a ginormous mess! I pull everything out, put it into piles of keep, toss, and give away. To not overwhelm yourself, only tackle one area/closet at a time. Make sure to give yourself enough time to get through each project. To make it more enjoyable I pull up Netflix or listen to music.

I know I am about a week late on this topic, but I wanted to talk about New Year’s Resolutions. Last year was probably the first year I ever actually made one; it was to get healthier. While I don’t restrict myself to the diet of a rabbit I have been more mindful of what I eat. Also I made more of a commitment to get in-shape. I don’t go to the gym 5 times a week, but I make it there 1-2 times, which is a huge improvement from the past, so I am going to chalk that up to a win! This year I am going to commit to doing things that make me happy. We all get sucked into doing things out of obligation of others, putting their needs before our own. This year I am going to work more towards doing the things that make me happy and fulfilled. What about you, are you turning over any new stones for the New Year?
It’s cold outside there ladies and gentleman. If you have to go and bear the cold weather make sure you are wrapped up. If not I hope you are wrapped up in a warm blanket, by the fire, with hot chocolate, and a good book!

2013 has been a year of ups and downs – aren’t they all? I don’t know about you, but I am happy and looking forward to a fresh start in 2014. As I get older I am much more sensitive about time, and I don’t want to waste any of it. What can I accomplish next year? What goals will I set for myself? Here are a few resolutions I have, what about you?
1) Read more. I am slowly killing my brain with reality tv and I need more enrichment.
2) Learn how to use my DSLR. I need to make the effort to figure out how to use all of the settings.
3) Do more outdoorsy things. Living in DC you forget that there are great parks and hikes close by.
4) Expand my cooking knowledge. Maybe this year I will tackle a new ethnic cuisine, Indian?
5) Be better about blog posts and follow through. The blog is a very fun hobby for Jessica and me, but sometimes it can be overwhelming. I need to stay organized.
6) And as always refocus my energy on getting lean and fit. Read this. Great tips on how to really get the results you want, and to be realistic about it.

This past month has been really crazy; I haven’t had the time to sit down to design and address 250 cards to everyone this year. However, I don’t think I can avoid it completely-there are a few family members (Grandma’s) and friends I know who would still appreciated getting a nice holiday note.
